Mr. Avanthi Jayatilake
Formerly in the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS), Mr.Jayatilake is one of the top most professional in Sri Lanka in the sphere of environment. He has over Thirty years of experience as an environmentalist and a project manager in a variety of development projects funded by major donor agencies including The ADB, World Bank, JICA and USAID. A milestone in his career is his tenure as USAID’s project manager responsible for the overall management and implementation of USAID’s US $ 26 Million Natural Resources and Environmental Policy Project under which environmental policies and regulations were formulated and legalized in Sri Lanka. In addition, he has also served as Special Advisor to the US Ambassador on environmental related matters.
In addition to his functions as the Managing Director of EML Consultants (Pvt) Limited, Mr. Jayatilake has served as the Team Leader/Study Director for over Twenty Five Environmental Impact Assessments designed and conducted by EML. His wide experience as an environmentalist covers a wide geographic region including several western countries, the Middle East and the South Asian region. He, has served as Environmental Specialist for the Southwest Area Integrated Water Resources Planning and Management Project (SAWRPMP) in Bangladesh, and also as Environmentalist for the ADB’s ‘South Asia Sub regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Tourism Development Project’, a regional project related to tourism infrastructure, involving South Asian countries. Mr Jayatilake has played a key role in the climate change initiatives in Sri Lanka. These include: Self-Assessment for the Preparation of Second National Communication on Climate Change, an action plan for climate change submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change ( UNFCCC), and his role in the Preparation of a synthesis report on sustainable development during the last 20 years of the country for Rio +20 summit. Mr Jayatilake has a M. Sc on Environmental Science.
